Consider A Checklist for Complex Repetitive Processes
By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer
Are there processes or activities in your life that you perform repeatedly and have so many steps that you inevitably forget some of them? If so, it might be time to consider creating a checklist.
For example, I often give training and coaching sessions over Zoom. There are quite a few considerations and preparations that need to happen before each of these sessions: telling my husband that I have a training so he doesn’t try to enter that room in our home, making sure I have a good shirt on, putting my phone on do not disturb, having my presentation and Zoom open, making sure I have water present, plugging in my better camera, etc. I realized there are about 29 steps that I like to make sure are complete before I start each one of these sessions. Instead of hoping that I magically remember 29 steps each time, I created a “Day Of Session Checklist” in my Outlook notes, and I run through the list to make sure each item is ready before I start each session. The presence of the checklist makes it nearly impossible for me to miss a step, and it drastically lessens my anxiety before I start interacting with my clients.
Do you have similar processes in your life requiring a lot of steps that you sometimes forget? Consider starting a checklist for those processes and consulting it each time you need to perform the task to reduce error and anxiety.
