Helpful App: Libby
By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer
I absolutely love listening to audiobooks. Listening to a nonfiction book at 3x speed while walking is the closest thing to a Matrix-style knowledge download as our current reality has to offer. My number one app for fueling all of my audiobook needs is Libby.
Libby is a free app that allows you to borrow audiobooks, ebooks, and magazines from your public library. So if you have a library card and if your library uses Libby, then you have everything you need to sign up!
I have borrowed over 200 books on Libby in the last year. I would say about 90% of the books that I want to check out are on the app in either audio or ebook format. It’s rare that I can’t find a title I wish to read. You can add tags to books. I have a Wishlist tag that I add to any book that I think would be interesting to read at some point in the future. You can put holds on books that aren’t currently available to check out, and the app will let you know when it’s available. You can listen to audiobooks at up to 3x speed. The books are downloaded to your phone so you can listen to them anywhere even in the absence of Wi-Fi. I haven’t had a single issue with the Libby app so far, and I can’t recommend it enough.
If your local library doesn’t use Libby, it wouldn’t hurt to make that request. Many libraries are connected to the app, so there should be resources that exist to help your library get started.
