I Am Not My Thoughts

By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer

I sometimes have thoughts that I don’t like.  Usually the thoughts I don’t like are unkind to me or others.  When I was young, I had the notion that if a thought was in my head, it must mean that I believe it.  But as I got older, I realized I don’t necessarily have control of the thoughts that pop into my head.  Sometimes thoughts come unbidden, and they often don’t reflect what I really want to think or believe.  It helped me a lot when I realized I am not those thoughts; I am the observer of those thoughts.  I can choose to believe or swipe aside each thought that comes into my mind.  So if I make a mistake in my life and my brain immediately thinks the thought, “I am such a loser!”…I can step back and examine that thought.  I can observe it and ask myself if it’s really true.  And I can reason with myself that I’m not a loser just because I made a mistake because that mistake helped me to learn something valuable for the future.  I save so much time beating myself up for nasty thoughts by reminding myself that I am not my thoughts.  I encourage you not to stew in the darker areas of your mind either.  Just remind yourself that you are not those thoughts and work to actively cultivate your true beliefs.
