It's Never Too Late for Your Goals

By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer

If you can believe it, we’re already in the final quarter of the year.  If you’re the type of person who makes yearly goals, now is a great time to look at those goals again.  Because it’s never too late to get started.

Even if you haven’t taken a single step toward some of your goals, there are still quite a few weeks left in the year.  Look over your goals for the year.  Are they still important to you?  Do you still want to make progress on them?  If not, then now is a great time to make that decision and let them fully go.  However, if they are still important, decide the first or next small step that you can make toward them, and then act.  If you wanted to read more, decide on a book and commit at least a small amount of time each day to reading.  If you wanted to work on your cooking skills, pick your favorite recipe one day, go grocery shopping another day, and get to work in the kitchen a day after that.  Did you want to clean out your garage this year?  Take 30 minutes a week between now and the end of the year, and you’ll probably have a transformed space by the new year.  Is there a work project that you haven’t started?  Calendar 30 minutes every other day or a couple of hours a week that you set aside to make progress on that project.

We don’t have to feel like failures if we haven’t started our goals until the end of the year.  Especially if you have year-end reviews at work, the projects that you complete in the last quarter will be fresh in your supervisor’s brain and be more top of mind than projects you completed at the beginning of the year when they sit down to write your evaluation.  Plus the momentum and feeling of accomplishment around year-end can keep you excited and motivated to keep working for your existing and new goals when January 1st hits.  If your goals still matter, you don’t have to hold off on them until January.  Every moment of every day is a fresh opportunity to make the changes you want in your life.  You can always start now.
