Other People's Opinions of You...

By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer

In this week’s blog post, I’m continuing the series regarding sentences that help me save time and energy.  This week’s addition to the pantheon is, “Other people’s opinions of you are none of your business.”

“Other people’s opinions of you are none of your business,” is a quote that if you search for the author, you’ll see it’s attributed to everyone.  I don’t have any idea who uttered that sentence first or even where I heard it first, but it has definitely helped me not waste time ruminating so much on what other people think of me.

This was another sentence that when I heard it for the first time, I knew I had to pay attention.  It made so much sense to me.  It reminds me that I’m not going to please everybody all of the time, or even most of the time.  An action of mine that may be liked by some will most likely be disliked by others.  Since there is no way to please everyone outside of myself, the most logical thing to do is what I think is best for my own opinion of myself and who I want to be.  If I act in accordance to my own integrity, then people who are genuinely attracted to what I’m authentically about will become my tribe.  And everyone else wasn’t meant for me.  I can’t change the minds of people who are not me, so I’m going to devote my time and energy to cultivating and growing the one mind I can mold…my own.

If you find yourself analyzing others’ opinions of you more than you like, try meditating on this week’s sentence and see if it can quiet your fears.  It definitely helps me.
