Permission to Create Before You Consume - Granted
By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer
In last week’s blog post, I referenced a recent Marie Forleo podcast in which she shared some of her top time management tips. Another one of her tips is to create before you consume. This is actually a tip that I’ve come across quite a few times. Brooke Castillo calls it taking massive action before passive action. Many thriving people tell us their success was built because they formed a habit of creating and working toward their biggest goals right away in the day thereby giving their first and best energy to that endeavor. Then the rest of the day, only after they’ve made progress on their main creation, can be divided up between consuming and responding to other activities.
So that means if you’re a comedian, you sit down and write jokes during the start of your day. If you’re a writer, you block time first thing and write. If you’re working on creating a fit body, you exercise early. If you have a presentation you need to finish as your top priority, you’re creating your visual aids and your talking points before doing anything else.
Activities like checking emails, reading news, watching TV, listening to podcasts can wait until later in the day. And if you’re reaching for your phone first thing after waking up and doing any of these passive behaviors, you’re probably wasting some of your best time and energy of the day. Don’t allow yourself to consume information from an external source until after you have created what is most important to you during your day. Establishing a habit to always create before you consume is a simple reordering of events that can pay outsized dividends.
