Permission to Move Your Body - Granted

By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer

Raise your hand if you currently or ever had a job that keeps you sitting for most hours of the day.  I’m definitely in this boat.  And I’ve had seasons of life when I’ve felt so tired after sitting at a desk all day that I go home and just sit some more.  Sometimes days feel so hectic that scheduling time to exercise feels like one task too many.  But for many successful people, skipping movement in their day is an absolute no-no.

Your body is the vessel that makes any job you do happen, so you want to make sure you maintain that vessel.  People like Ed Mylett, Jenna Kutcher, Marie Forleo, Brooke Castillo, and the list goes on and on swear that moving their bodies during the day actually makes time instead of taking time.  They reason that moving your body not only makes your body healthy and stronger and running at max capacity, but it also gives you energy.  They also claim that physical exertion helps them to clear their minds and jump back into work refreshed.

I definitely notice the benefits of moving my body in my own life.  When I worked a corporate job, we didn’t really get breaks at all during the day.  However, on days when I would take 20 to 30 minutes to go outside and walk around, I noticed I had more gas in the tank to finish my day out strong.  Now I try to move my body 1-3 hours a day; an hour of which is usually walking outside.  One would think that exertion would lead to a more tired body, but I’m always more tired on days when I’m not moving at all.  It seems completely contradictory, but it’s absolutely true.

If your life is hectic and you feel like you have to sacrifice moving your body but you don’t want to, I hope the examples of successful, busy people making exercise a very high priority give you a reason to rethink your time.  Is there a way to go to bed earlier in order to get up earlier to fit it in?  Is there a way to sneak some movement in during the workday?  Can you give up some TV, social media, internet scrolling time to make it happen?  People who are far busier than I absolutely do not miss their exercise time, so where there’s a will, there’s often a way.
