The Kindness of Strangers
By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer
In Robin Sharma’s book Who Will Cry When You Die? Life Lessons From the Monk Who Sold His Ferrari, the author encourages readers to do something kind for a stranger every day. Help people merge in traffic. Give up your seat on public transportation. Tithe to people who help you on your spiritual path or even authors of books who have helped you. This time of year, there are giving trees at many schools, churches, and offices where we can buy gifts for those who can’t afford them during the holiday season. I try to make sure I always wave, smile, and say hi to the people I walk past on my daily walks. If I go to restaurants, I try to remember names of my servers if I get the same people often. Learn the names of the security people or cleaning people you interact with in your office building. Giving a compliment and expecting nothing in return can make a person’s day. Give time or money to your favorite charity. I know when I receive kindness from strangers, it helps me to feel more grounded and at ease in the world. I can also help spread that ease to others with my own kind acts. What can you do for the strangers in your life?
