Wanting What You Already Have

By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer

The holiday season is a time of year when we ask people for lists of things they want that can be purchased as gifts.  Making lists of things we don’t have but we want is a somewhat regular exercise for many of us.  But life coach Brooke Castillo encourages us to also regularly make lists of what we want and we already have.  Brooke explains that spending some time reflecting on what you already have creates a feeling of abundance and satisfaction that steers us away from creating our lives based on constant feelings of scarcity and lack.  Think of this idea like going to the grocery store.  What happens when you go to the store while you’re really hungry?  You end up spending way more than you intended and you probably buy a bunch of junk food items that aren’t what you would consciously choose for yourself in a less hungry state.  But if you eat before going to the grocery store, it will be easier to consciously choose the food that is good for you and stick to the list of items you actually want.

What would go on your list of what you want that you already have?  Your house?  The town you live in?  Your close relationship with your child/parents/sibling?  Your marriage?  Your health?  Your job?  Your book/music/toy/ornament collection?  Your travel experiences?  Clean drinking water?  The beautiful tree in your backyard?  Your working car?  Your luxurious bathtub?  Your generosity?  Your green thumb?  Your baking skills?  Strawberries?  Your lasagna?  Make your list, revisit and update it from time to time, and let the satisfaction and contentment for what you already have color your ideas for what you don’t yet have and want to strive for in the future.
