Be A Tourist In Your Own Backyard
By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer
I spent about 6 years in my 20’s living in New York City. I didn’t think I would stay there forever, so I promised myself before moving that I would do and see as much as I possibly could while in that big beautiful city. And my goodness, I definitely delivered on that oath.
I experienced so much of that city: hundreds of plays, ballets, orchestra performances, operas, concerts, sporting events, rodeos, historical places, museums, restaurants, movie locations, parks, zoos, gardens, special events…you name it, I probably did it.
After leaving NYC and moving to Cleveland, I kept that same “tourist in my own backyard” mentality. I checked out plays, ballets, orchestra performances, concerts, sporting events, historical places, museums, etc. there too. When my coworkers at the time would hear of the places I was going, many of them said they hadn’t been to those places themselves, even though they had always lived in the area. That made me marvel at how much so many of us miss by not exploring the sites that are available to us in our own towns.
We often don’t have to go far or pay much to have an experience. The town I currently live in has so many great parks, restaurants, and events that I always feel like there is something new to explore.
Even in my hometown in Wisconsin with a population of about 3,000, there are parks, restaurants, historical homes, and other fascinating locations within the city limits and short drives away.
If you’re feeling wanderlust but don’t have a lot of time or money, consider exploring the places and events in your own backyard. There is so much beauty in most places.
