Do You Wish Time Away?
By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer
Many people wish for more hours in their days but simultaneously have pockets of time each day that they wish away. Those pockets might be sitting in traffic or waiting in the school pick-up line (or any long line) or weekly meetings where nothing ever seems to be accomplished.
In my life, if I find myself wishing time away, I first ascertain whether I can eliminate that activity from my life or not. Can I find a job where I work from home so I no longer have to sit in traffic so often? Can I decline that weekly meeting or get another job so I no longer have to attend? Sometimes it is possible to completely eliminate the activities that I wish away.
However, at times eliminating the activities is not possible. In those instances, I brainstorm how I can make the time better. If I have to sit in traffic or in a long line, I always have audio books, podcasts, and music available on my phone. If I have shorter waits, I often meditate or send loving kindness to the people around me. If I’m in a meeting I would rather not be in, I try to be really present anyway – listening to everyone speak and playing a game with myself to find something worthwhile in the content.
I encourage you to do an audit of your time the next couple of days. Try to notice when you’re wishing your time away and see if there’s anything you could do to either eliminate or lessen the activity or make it better. Life is short, so let’s see if we can make more and more of our minutes count.
