How to Create a Rule to Move Unwanted Email to Deleted Items in Outlook

By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer

At times there are emails I receive that I can’t unsubscribe to but I don’t want/need to review them (these are usually internal corporate emails at places of employment).  Or some people don’t like to unsubscribe to emails because at times this action will alert internet data miners that their email address is active, their information is sold, and they start to receive more emails by unsubscribing.  For whatever reason, if you receive emails that you can’t stop but don’t want to see, a solution would be to create a rule in Outlook to move those emails to your Deleted Items automatically.

Here's how you create that rule.

Right click one of the emails that you want to no longer see.  Then select Rules.

Select Create Rule.

A pop up box says, “When I get email with all of the selected conditions,” and asks you to pinpoint the emails you wish to target.  If all the emails from that specific sender are useless to you, then you can click the box next to the From option.  If all the emails you no longer wish to see contain certain text in the subject line, then you would click the box next to the Subject contains option.  Most of the time one of those two options will help you target the emails you wish to eliminate.

Next you need to specify what should happen to those emails.  Click on the Move the item to folder box.  Then click Select Folder.  Find your Deleted Items folder and click on that.  Select OK.  Then select OK again.

Then wave goodbye to those unwanted emails.
