I’m Done Apologizing for Crying
By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer
At the start of each new year, I reflect on what I want to do differently than the year before. Sometimes I want to start something new. But other times, I want to stop a habit that doesn’t serve me and only wastes my time and energy. A habit that I see a lot in myself and in our culture in general that I think doesn’t serve us is apologizing when we cry. Please note, crying is not the habit I want to stop. I think crying is vulnerable, cathartic, beautiful, and human. But apologizing for crying…now that is something that I personally want to stop doing and to encourage others to halt as well. And this is why:
Dear World,
Please let this serve as my official notice that…
I’m done apologizing for crying
No more will I hold back my tears
For any reason at all
Whether I’m sad, mad, scared, hurt,
Happy, or enthralled
You see holding in my emotions
Does me and the world no good
My tears pull me back to my body and the present
My tears are my humanhood.
Crying is a way that my body expels the bad
Crying is a release to work through the ugly mad
Crying is my path through grief: its presence is a love sign
Crying is a signal to me when I’m in the presence of the divine
It’s present when I’m physically hurt
It visits in any horror I see
It’s there when I confront the beauty of the world
It’s a friend that brings me to my knees
I cry when I do well
I cry when I fail
I cry when I feel unconditional love
To beauty it is the trail
My tears are the manifestation
Of my body and soul aligned
So I’m done apologizing for crying
And I hope you proceed in kind
